The Adaptive Learning Center is honored to be named on of the beneficiary of this year’s Pound the Pavement for Peter event taking place on March 19th at Capital City Club in Brookhaven, GA.
Pound the Pavement for Peter is a Family 5K Fun Run that was started in 2009 in honor of Peter Hopkins, who suffering from a Peroxisomal Disorder (PBD), lived his life with many disabilities, and eventually lost his life at age 3. This event is held to raise awareness and funds to help families and children with disabilities and debilitating diseases.
The support that the community has given over the years to Pound the Pavement for Peter inspired those involved to keep going and to have hope, even in the darkest of times throughout his life and passing.
About Peroxisome Biogenesis Disorders (PBDs):
The incidence of peroxisomal disorders is 1:20,000.
There are two types of peroxisomal disorders: single peroxisomal enzyme deficiencies and peroxisomal biogenesis disorders (PBDs). The former are caused by mutations of genes encoding specific peroxisomal enzymes. PBDs are caused by mutations of PEX genes that are involved in the biogenesis and function of peroxisomes and are characterized by deficiencies of multiple peroxisomal enzymes and, in some cases, by absence or reduction in the number of peroxisomes. The most severe and important PBD is the Zellweger spectrum. The most frequent peroxisomal disorder is X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (XALD). XALD is neither a single peroxisomal enzyme deficiency nor a PBD. It is due to a defect in the transport of VLCFAs across the peroxisomal membrane (see further on).
