“Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best they can possibly be” – Rita F. Pierson

The Adaptive Learning Center is thrilled to announce the launching of our new blog, ALC Kids.  We hope that you will enjoy our journey to learn more about The Adaptive Learning Center, our partnering preschools, as well as the Inclusion Specialists, participants and families that make ALC so special.

What is ALC:
We are the only organization in Georgia that fully integrates children with special needs into typical preschools – with individualized support from special education support teachers. Our partnerships with some of Atlanta’s finest preschools enable children to learn and play alongside their peers in a warm and caring environment. In classes with 90 percent or more typical children, children with disabilities learn not just basic academic skills; they discover important life lessons through interactions with other children and adults.

History of ALC:
The Adaptive Learning Center was created in 1982 as an early intervention program, but moved to a new model in 1998 as research began to reveal that the best education for children who have special needs is through an inclusion program.  This new model enabled trained ALC professionals (Inclusion Specialists) to integrate special education and therapy into the regular preschool curriculum and classroom activities.

To this day, The Adaptive Learning Center has one of the few state of the art programs due to its unique system of community partnerships with 9 quality preschools.

What is an inclusive preschool:
Inclusion is the full and active participation of children with disabilities or other special needs, along with typically developing children, in community activities, services and programs, including preschool.

Services:
The Adaptive Learning Center offers therapy and education for infants and young children with, or at risk for, development disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, mitochondrial disease, Peroxisomal Disorder, Corpus Collosum and Fragile X Syndrome.

We hope that you stay connected with the ALC Kids Blog and ALC on Facebook
There is much more to come and we look forward to introducing you to the entire ALC Program!

March 25, 2016 is National Cerebral Palsy (CP) Awareness Day and ALC is doing our part to spread the word!

FACT: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common motor disability in childhood according to the CDC

According to the United Cerebral Palsy, Cerebral palsy is a broad diagnostic term used to describe a problem with movement and posture, due to damage or abnormalities in the brain that makes certain activities difficult. It is the most common motor disorder and the second-most common disability found in children.

About 10,000 infants are diagnosed with CP and up to 1,500 preschoolers in the U.S. are recognized as having it each year. The United Cerebral Palsy Association estimates that more than 764,000 Americans have CP.

The Adaptive Learning Center, an inclusions preschool program for children with special needs, is working hard every day to raise awareness for cerebral palsy and other disabilities affecting our preschool communities. For National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day, we ask that you share this blog post, raise awareness and tag a friend who is affect by Cerebral Palsy!
